Charity Objectives and Grant

Charity Objectives & Grants

The Chartered Accountants’ Livery Charity’s legal objects set out in its trust deed are widely drawn. Within those objects, the Trustees tend to support (in no particular order):

Charity Objectives

Causes where the grant will make a significant difference

Causes related to education for all ages, with a focus on core enabling skills such as financial literacy, numeracy, literacy & digital skills

Causes that will increase social mobility and alleviate poverty in respect of children and youth in need

Causes which are associated with the accountancy profession, the City or the Livery

Causes which support the welfare of personnel who belong or have belonged to the Company’s military & other affiliations

Causes introduced by members of the Company and causes in which Company members are involved

Types of Grants

Grants of typically up to £5,000 are made to charities in need of support for projects the Trustees feel fit with the Charity’s Objectives.

The Trustees will want to know the grant will make a difference and will support a tangible outcome. They are open to match-funding and further support beyond the one grant if they feel their support, whether financial, professional or personal, can make a difference.

Applications do not need to be sponsored by a member of the Chartered Accountants’ Livery Company, however, members are invited to sponsor applications from organisations they are involved with.

Chapter One UK

Major Project Award of a total of up to £225,000 over three years. This is awarded to a lead charity, chosen from candidate charities recommended by Company members. Ideally such support will be mainly directed to a project or projects to which the Company’s funding will make a real difference and will lead to a tangible outcome.

We will provide either capital or revenue support, as appropriate, and look favourably on innovation. The Trustees only make formal commitments year by year, on the basis of regular progress reports received.

We look particularly favourably on projects which will enable direct involvement of Company members.

LTSB
Leadership Through Sport & Business

Recurring support for the Company’s affiliated military and cadet units – Royal Marines Poole (SBS Association), 47 Squadron Royal Air Force, Special Forces Support Group (SFSG), Harrow and Wembley Sea Cadets and Dartmouth RNC.

Our support is always directed towards the welfare of personnel and families and the provision of non-military equipment.

All of the City Livery Companies support the City and its Lord Mayor both in maintaining its traditions and supporting its charitable projects.

Our Charity is pleased to offer regular, annual support to a range of charities across the City and beyond.

Treloars

We look kindly on projects related to disadvantaged children and youth.

We generally do not support causes which promote a single religion (apart from City places of worship), political causes, animal welfare or medical support. We are unlikely to support sporting events.

Whilst there is no geographic restriction, causes supported usually operate primarily in England and Wales.

We will only support registered charities or other organisations whose governance and approach to safeguarding is in order and which are solvent, with Charity Commission and Companies House filings, as appropriate, submitted on time. Where members of the Company not only support an application, but have knowledge of the applicant, we see this as a key part of our decision-making due diligence.
